News on coming KDE 4.1 features

Also, KDE 4.01 due by end of January. I'm running 4.0.0 right now and it's usable with a handful of bugs and annoyances which will be fixed in the coming weeks. A lot of potential in future releases.

KDE 4.0.0 final packages uploaded to Hardy Repos

The KDE 4.0.0 (3.98) packages have been uploading last night and this morning. I have already noticed significant improvement in many of the earlier issues and bugs I experienced in earlier builds. Some things that have been fixed:

1) Right click context menu (albeit basic) on the taskbar.
2) Desktop icons are displaying.
3) Cleaner edges on windows
4) Much improved startup splash screen
5) Right clicking on an application inside of Kicker (start button) now let's you add shortcuts to the desktop.

Packages are still uploading and I haven't downloaded and installed them yet. I will be updating this post through the weekend.

KDE 4.0.0 is a basic platform delivery and many additional capabilities will be added in later versions.

I have it mostly working. KDE 4 takes less memory to run than KDE 3.5 and looks much better.

After installing Wine, these applications work on my system. Future Wine updates may fix some of my current issues. Current version of Wine in Hardy is 0.9.46.

1) Google Sketchup (partial - some issues with OpenGL)
2) IrfanView 4.1 (good)
3) FastStone Image Viewer 3.4 (nice)

Steps to Installing Apache from Source

Download $ lynx http://httpd.apache.org/download.cgi
Extract $ gzip -d httpd-2_0_NN.tar.gz
$ tar xvf httpd-2_0_NN.tar
Configure $ ./configure --prefix=PREFIX
Compile $ make
Install $ make install
Customize $ vi PREFIX/conf/httpd.conf
Test $ PREFIX/bin/apachectl start

Some problems installing Apache

Had problems installing Apache from source on the Linux Server box. First it couldn't find GCC. I install the GCC package (I already had GCC 4.x installed) and it fixed this problem. After that, I ./configured again and got "C compiler cannot create executables". I found on Google a solution by doing a :
sudo apt-get install build-essential
